1 videocassette (VHS) (30 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  • Producer/director Joseph Papp discusses the current state of Broadway and his plans for the future with host Tony Guida and theater critics Clive Barnes and Samuel G. Freedman. Discussion includes the current development of the Times Square theater district and the resulting destruction of historic theaters; Papp's efforts to convince the city to intervene to protect the theaters, and his plan that would require real estate developers to contribute to a $50 million theatrical fund; the changing demographics of theatergoing audience; current playwriting in comparison with the plays written during the 1960s and '70s; the effect of high ticket prices on the kind of the shows produced on Broadway; more on Papp's plan which would have profitable Broadway shows underwrite serious dramatic plays.
  • Papp also discusses the subsidization of theater; the economics of producing a show on Broadway in comparison with Off Broadway; how rising real estate prices affect nonprofit arts organizations; more on his view that the city must circumscribe business and real estate activities within the theater district; his plan to acquire the Belasco Theatre for the performance of Shakespearean plays for New York City high school students; the role of theater critics in making a show successful; and the economics of writing plays for Broadway in comparison with writing novels or screenplays.
