- Theatrical producer Joseph Papp discusses his views on American theater with interviewer Charlie Rose. Topics include the purpose of theater; the qualities that make a good producer; Papp's motivation to produce free Shakespearean plays in Central Park; the quality of theater in the United States and its relationship to philanthropic support; stage acting in comparison with film; actors George C. Scott and Meryl Streep; casting Linda Ronstadt as Mabel in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Pirates of Penzance; the various forms of financial support for the theater; the lack of interest in supporting the theater by the federal government; the quality of the theatrical work currently being produced in the U.S.; the quality of theater in the U.S. currently in comparison with that of other countries, and with theater during the 1960s and 70s; his production of works by British, Czech and Russian playwrights.
