Summary
Profile of Veronica Tennant, for many years a principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada. In interviews and in readings at a recording session, Tennant describes her passionate quest for perfection as a dancer, which enabled her to surmount physical shortcomings and injuries. She recalls her early success as Juliet in John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet; dancing opposite the Russian legends Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov; the new approach to performing she developed after the birth of her daughter; and her retirement from performing at the age of 43. Following her retirement, she has pursued a richly rewarding career as a producer and director of television dance specials, and received an Emmy award for her documentary Karen Kain: dancing in the moment. Among the many dance excerpts included in this documentary are excerpts from Tennant's performances in Romeo and Juliet [with Earl Kraul in 1965 and Raymond Smith in 1982], The sleeping beauty (with Nureyev), a rehearsal of La sylphide with Baryshnikov, and the adagio from Le corsaire pas de deux. Tennant is also seen teaching students at Canada's National Ballet School, and directing a dance film featuring dancer Peggy Baker and cellist Shauna Rolston.
