- Summary
- Segment one, Live at five, aired New York City, Channel 4, WNBC-TV, February 25, 1983. Segment begins at 6:00 and ends at 13:00. Reports concerning the death of American playwright, Tennessee Williams (1911-1983). Williams, whose body has been found in a midtown Manhattan hotel room, was 71. Report by Jim Van Sickle includes brief interviews with police, passersby, theatergoers and acquaintances of Williams. An obituary by David Diaz which follows, includes interviews with actress Jessica Tandy who played Blanche Dubois in Williams' play A streetcar named desire, and with producer/director Joseph Papp who evaluates Williams as a playwright. Includes still photos of Williams and his play production.
- Segment two, Today show, aired Channel 4 , WABC-TV, March 3, 1983. Segment begins at 53:00 and ends at 58:00. Gene Shalit interviews actor/singer George Rose who stars in the movie version of the New York Shakespeare Festival production of The pirates of Penzance, based on the operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. Rose discusses the movie's faithfulness to the musical originally produced by Joseph Papp at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, and sings a few lines from its song I am the very model of a modern major general. Rose discusses his early training in elocution, his current role in the musical Dance a little closer, and his work reciting classic English literature in recordings for the blind. Includes brief footage from the movie The pirates of Penzance.
