- Summary
- A two-part report focusing on the current economic troubles facing Broadway aired Channel 2 news, WCBS-TV. A substantial decline in box office revenue over previous seasons and the rapid closing of many shows are cited as indicators of Broadway's economic woes. Includes interviews with theatrical producers Joseph Papp, Manny Eisenberg, Zev Bauman, Elizabeth I. McCann, Emanuel Azenberg, Bernard Jacobs and Richard Barr who discuss various aspects and possible causes of the so-called Broadway slump. Papp discusses what he perceives to be the generally poor quality of shows currently being presented on Broadway and speaks about the high cost of sustaining his play Plenty by David Hare on Broadway. Remaining discussion includes the Broadway season; more on high ticket prices; the longevity of two Broadway shows in relation to the way their creative staff are paid; discount venues for theater tickets; and Broadway in comparison to the national theater as exists, for example, in the United Kingdom.
