Interview with theatrical producer Joseph Papp. Program begins with historical overview of the New York Shakespeare Festival, including the 1959 feud between Papp and Parks Commissioner Robert Moses over charging admission to the Festival's free Central Park plays. Papp discusses Shakespeare's artistry and the relevance of his works to contemporary audiences; casting minority actors in Shakespearean roles; the scarcity of works on Broadway by contemporary playwrights; the need for a national theater; the financial requirements of the New York Shakespeare Festival; and the importance of the arts to New York City.
