Summary
Discussion presented in conjunction with a joint performance by Germaine Acogny and Vincent Mantsoe at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 14, 2003 (for a recording of this performance, see *MGZIA 4-6795 Germaine Acogny and Vincent Sekwati Koko Mantsoe). They discuss their choreographic approaches, Mantsoe's strongly influenced by his roots in a family of shamans, Acogny's by her concept of the close connection of African dance and the natural world. Acogny also discusses dance training and transmission at her center in Toubab Dialaw. Both have experience in dance education, Mantsoe with the Moving into Dance company in South Africa, Acogny as artistic director of the now defunct school Mudra Afrique, instigated by Maurice Béjart, in Senegal. They discuss the spiritual dimension of their work. A question-and-answer session follows. The recording stops before the end of the program.
