Bernstein gives spoken introductions to some excerpts, explaining which segment of the ballet they pertain to, technical details about the composition and differences between versions. Many excerpts are played multiple times. Bernstein sings vocal parts of the score and provides percussion. These tapes were made for Jerome Robbins. Robbins may have been present at some of the recording sessions.

Bernstein provides a spoken response, discussing the structure of the ballet, and plays the same excerpt on the piano.
