Summary
  • Discs 1-3. Leonard Bernstein plays excerpts from his score for Jerome Robbins' ballet, Dybbuk (1974), on the piano. The recordings consists mainly of music. Bernstein gives spoken introductions to some excerpts, explaining which segment of the ballet they pertain to, technical details about the composition and differences between versions. Many excerpts are played multiple times. Bernstein sings vocal parts of the score and provides percussion. These tapes were made for Jerome Robbins. Robbins may have been present at some of the recording sessions.
  • Disc 4. Track 1 (ca. 12 min.) Excerpts from the score for Dybbuk, orchestrated, with vocals performed by two male singers. Track 2 (ca. 6 min.) Jerome Robbins provides a spoken introduction to an excerpt from the Dybbuk score played by pianist Gordon Boelzner, recorded for Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein provides a spoken response, discussing the structure of the ballet, and plays the same excerpt on the piano.
  • Discs 5-7. Leonard Bernstein plays excerpts from his score for Dybbuk on the piano, with two male singers performing vocal portions of the score. [Relevant content on disc 7 ends ca. 21 min. The remainder of the disc contains unidentified orchestral music. Presumably the tape was reused to record excerpts from Dybbuk.]
