- Summary
- This documentary focuses on a production of Fiddler on the roof performed by African-American students at a junior high school in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, and the controversy surrounding the production. Discussion of contemporary teachers' strikes in Brownsville is interwoven, featuring interviews with and speeches by Albert Shanker, head of the United Federation of Teachers. The documentary includes footage of the production of Fiddler on the roof in 1968 at Harry A. Eisman Junior High School (P.S. 275); interviews with Richard Piro, the teacher who staged the production, and with black and Jewish students at the school, their parents, and Leslie Campbell, a teacher of Afro-American Studies at P.S. 271; filmed discussions on the subject of black-Jewish relations among students, between Rabbi Allan Miller and Rev. William A. Jones, Jr., and by teachers in the New Coalition Party, which opposed the United Federation of Teachers during the Brownsville strikes; and comments by Joseph Stein, author of the book for Fiddler on the roof, after seeing the student production. The documentary explores issues of black antisemitism, racism among Jews, and cross-cultural understanding.
