Summary
The William Stanley Braithwaite Photograph Collection consists mainly of individual and group portraits and snapshots of Braithwaite, his family, friends and colleagues, from around the late 1800s to the late 1970s. The collection also includes some views of street scenes and structures, film stills, publicity photographs, and a view of a gravesite. The collection does not depict Braithwaite's early life, or his activities as a writer or editor, and is limited in depicting his personal life.
The personal photographs series consists of individual and group portraits and candid shots of Braithwaite, family and friends from the 1800s to the 1970s. Included are a studio portrait (ca. 1956) and a candid portrait (1958) of Braithwaite; a group portrait with Braithwaite at an unidentified gathering (n.d.); a group portrait of Braithwaite's wife Emma, daughters Katherine, Edith and Fiona, and granddaughter Joan (n.d.); and a studio portrait of Braithwaite's sisters, Eva and Rosie, as the musical duo Sadie and Rosie, the DeWolfe Sisters (ca. 1890s).
The professional colleagues series consists of individual and publicity portraits from the 1900s to 1950s. Included are studio portraits of writers and poets such as Lucius Beebe, Virgil Stanley Millikin, Margaret Widdemer, Ridgely Torrance, A.M. Sullivan, David Morton and Marianne Moore. Some of these images were probably used for publicity purposes. Other individuals depicted include educator Booker T. Washington, composer W.C. Handy (1940), musician Roland Hayes, and actor Richard B. Harrison in a publicity still for the theatrical production "The Green Pastures" (1930).
The miscellaneous series includes views of Upper Manhattan and the Bronx from Braithwaite's apartment at 409 Edgecomb Avenue, in Harlem (ca. 1950); views of Dana Hall at Wellesley College, Massachusetts (n.d.) and Trinity Church, in Boston (1933); and two film stills from the 1944 film "Since You Went Away," featuring Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones.
