Contents
  • They danced up a storm in Bulgaria (1976; ca. 24 min.) / telecast on Weekend, October 9, 1976; produced by Craig Leake. Documentary on the 8th International Ballet Festival in Varna, Bulgaria, held in summer 1976. The program focuses on five American entrants: Stacy Swanner, Ann Marie De Angelo, Lynn Charles, Sandra Fortune, and Anna Spellman. Also seen in brief performance excerpts are Pavlina Geleva and Vladimir Ghinkoulov, Antoinetta Georgieva and Andrés Williams, Valentina Hadjiyska, Libor Vaculík, Kumiko Maeda, Ahmed Shoukry, Sylvester Campbell (who appeared as Fortune's partner but did not compete), Marin Boieru, and Hana Vlacilova. American dance critic Walter Terry, who was one of the judges, offers some commentary; also appearing on camera are Alicia Alonso and Yuri Grigorovich. In an extended sequence, gold medallist Patrick Dupond is seen rehearsing with John Gilpin and Anton Dolin. Ann Marie De Angelo is seen rehearsing with Robert Joffrey and performing "Vortex" from Alvin Ailey's The river.
  • Natasha (ca. 14 min.) / telecast on CBS-TV's 60 minutes; produced by Igor Oganesoff; interviewer, Morley Safer. Profile of Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova, who appears in several performance excerpts from American Ballet Theatre's production of The sleeping beauty. Makarova appears as Princess Aurora, partnered by Ivan Nagy. In the ballet studio, she is seen refining her performance as Aurora through the coaching of Robert Helpmann, and rehearsing sections from Act II of Giselle. A glimpse of her private life shows her with her husband Edward Karkar. The visual quality of this segment is extremely poor.
  • [Star wars] (1978; ca. 6 min.) / telecast on The stars salute Israel at 30 on May 8, 1978; a presentation of James Lipton Productions; directed and produced by Marty Pasetta; choreographic credit not announced, possibly by Alan Johnson; music composed and conducted by John Williams; danced by Galina Panova, Valery Panov, and male ensemble; music played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
  • Dances from Jerome Robbins' Chopin ballets (c1978; ca. 10 min.) / telecast on The stars salute Israel at 30 on May 8, 1978; a presentation of James Lipton Productions; directed and produced by Marty Pasetta; choreography (especially prepared for this performance), Jerome Robbins; music, Frédéric Chopin; danced by Gelsey Kirkland and Mikhail Baryshnikov; pianist, Jerry Zimmerman. Title from end credits; the choreography of the first duet and male variation are from Dances at a gathering, and the female variation and final duet from Other dances. This recording also appears on *MGZIC 9-3549 The stars salute Israel at 30.
