- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (66 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Allegra Kent coaches Peter Boal and Janie Taylor in choreographic excerpts for the two principal dancers in La sonnambula (originally titled Night shadow in its 1946 premiere by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo), including the Sleepwalker pas de deux and the Death of the Poet. As she works with the dancers, she recalls examples of Balanchine's directions to her when she recreated the role of the Sleepwalker for its 1960 revival by the New York City Ballet. Taylor wears the Sleepwalker's costume executed by Karinska for this revival. In an interview beginning at ca. 58 min. into the tape, Kent discusses her first viewing of La sonnambula as a child; its change of title; the importance of its music; and the dramatic challenges of the role of the Sleepwalker.
