Summary
Jerome Robbins answers questions about his ballet Variations on I'm old fashioned. The interviewer speaks from behind the camera. Robbins discusses his feelings about being observed while he works; his belief that Fred Astaire's artistry transcends popular entertainment; the style and mood he hopes to capture in his ballet; the role of the unconscious and unplanned in his creative process; how his creative work is done in the studio; his propensity for keeping many variables open during the creation of a work; his collaboration with Morton Gould; how far the work has progressed; the difference between choreographic variations and musical variations.   • Variations on I'm old fashioned is a ballet tribute to Fred Astaire, with music by Morton Gould, based on Jerome Kern's song I'm old fashioned, from the motion picture You were never lovelier (Columbia, 1942). The ballet premiered on June 16, 1983.
  • This tape is one of 36 made between Sept. and Nov. 1982 for a projected documentary on the making of I'm old fashioned. DeWitt Sage, Joel Gold and John Goberman were involved in the project, which was never produced.
