Summary
Profile of Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, drawn from her autobiography [English title: I, Maya Plisetskaya] and present-day interviews. Her discussion of significant people, events, and ballets in her life is illustrated by footage of performances, interviews, and special occasions spanning the course of her career. Among the topics she discusses are her childhood during the Stalinist period; the communal life she shared with other Bolshoi performers early in her career; the ballets Swan lake and The dying swan, mainstays of her repertoire; the suspicion of the KGB, which prevented her from touring abroad until the 1950s; the frustrated genius of choreographer Leonid Jacobson, who played an important role in her life; her marriage to composer Rodion Shchedrin; dancing the title role in Alberto Alonso's Carmen; her roles in films; ballets danced in her later career, notably Maurice Béjart's Bolero; her own choreography.
