- Summary
- Memorial in honor of Herbert Ross (May 13, 1925-Oct. 9, 2001), choreographer and stage and film director. The late Nora Kaye, his wife and professional partner, and their company Ballet of Two Worlds are also discussed by several speakers. In addition to remembrances of Ross in professional and private life, the speakers talk about his films Steel magnolias, The goodbye girl, and The turning point, and his ballets Caprichos, Tristan and The maids. The program includes clips from films directed by Ross: The turning point, The goodbye girl, Play it again Sam, The sunshine boys, The last of Sheila, Steel magnolias, Boys on the side, The owl and the pussycat, Funny lady, Footloose, Pennies from heaven, California suite. His choreography is represented by the film Inside Daisy Clover, Caprichos (WNET, 1958), a song-and-dance number from On a clear day you can see forever (Bell Telephone Hour, 1966), and "The story of Lucy and Jessie" from Follies: in concert (1985). Ross himself is seen in action in rehearsal footage of La bohème, shot in Los Angeles in 1993. The program included two songs performed by Barbara Cook, accompanied by Wally Harper: "He was too good to me" and "Losing my mind."
