- Summary
- Biography of Gene Kelly, celebrating his achievements as performer, choreographer, and director on stage and film. Among the topics discussed are his creation of an all-American masculine stage persona ; his professional partnership with Stanley Donen ; the contrast of his dance style and that of Fred Astaire ; his innovations and experiments in filming dance ; his contributions as role model to a new generation of male dancers. The program includes extended analyses, illustrated with film clips, of his most significant films: On the town, An American in Paris, and Singin' in the rain. In addition to Kelly's own remarks, heard in pre-recorded interviews, there are commentaries by family members, fellow performers and collaborators, and critics and historians.
