Summary
Drama about an aspiring ballet dancer who is forced by her mother's death to move to a new city. Attending a predominantly African-American high school, she finds romance and a new direction for her dancing. The film explores issues of race relations and interracial romance. Its many dance scenes include hip-hop dancing in clubs ; practice sessions in hip-hop dancing by the two main characters ; glimpses of ballet classes ; and auditions for the Juilliard School, including a solo combining ballet and hip-hop. The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago is seen in performance excerpts from Léonide Massine's Les présages and Gerald Arpino's Sea shadow.
