Description
1 videocassette (58 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
Documentary on anorexia nervosa and bulimia, eating disorders that have grown increasingly prevalent in contemporary American society. Experts in the field discuss some of their underlying causes (especially cultural pressures to be thin), their physiological and psychological effects, and some medical and therapeutic treatments that have been developed. The interviewees include patients representing particularly vulnerable groups: young women from troubled families, dancers, fashion models, athletes. Erika Goodman, a former dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, speaks compellingly of the premature osteoporosis and loss of mobility that have resulted from her anorexic behavior in earlier life. Other interviewees describe successful struggles against unattainable and unhealthy body images ; among them are Kate Dillon, a former supermodel, and dancers Katey Tracey and Eleena Melamed.
