Summary
Part of Rêves d'étoiles, les grands ballets de Rudolf Noureev, a series of six documentaries. This program focuses on the Paris Opéra Ballet's 1995 production of Nureyev's Romeo and Juliet on the stage of the Opéra Bastille. Principal dancers Elisabeth Maurin (Juliet) and Manuel Legris (Romeo) and other cast members are seen at work with rehearsal mistress Patricia Ruanne, who danced Juliet in Nureyev's 1977 staging for London Festival Ballet ; performance excerpts provide a glimpse of the finished product. Topics covered in interviews include the circumstances of its creation for London Festival Ballet in 1977 ; the technical and dramatic demands of its choreography ; the interpretation of its characters ; Nureyev's emphasis on the rapid progression of events and the cinematic quality of the scenario. Also included are a brief history of the Romeo and Juliet story and its depiction in Shakespeare's play ; a discussion of Prokofiev's creation of the score, illustrated by b&w excerpts of Galina Ulanova and Konstantin Sergeev in Leonid Lavrovsky's version of the ballet (1940) ; a discussion of scene designs for various productions of Nureyev's version, as well as the designs for Serge Lifar's 1955 version at the Opéra.
