Summary
In two separate interviews, Barbara McLeod talks with Alexander Grant and George Crum, respectively artistic director and musical director of the National Ballet of Canada. Grant discusses the difficult decision to leave the Royal Ballet, after a 30-year performing career, for the National Ballet of Canada ; the company's current season ; the role of the classics (such as The sleeping beauty) in helping a company set and maintain its standards ; the self-discipline of dancers ; the ballet boom ; the film The turning point as a means of building audiences and preserving the dancing of Mikhail Baryshnikov ; physical effort as an inherent part of dancing ; locating new dancers for the company ; how the experience of being a dancer enhances the work of an artistic director ; adding Frederick Ashton's The dream to the Canadians' repertory. Crum speaks humorously about the difficulties of bowing after a performance, noting Rudolf Nureyev's skill in this art. He also discusses the ramifications of conducting for dance: giving both dance and music equal importance ; adjusting tempos to the dancers' physical capacities ; recognizing musicality in a dancer ; working with pick-up orchestras.
