Summary
Documentary on Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. In a brief glimpse of Monte Carlo's rich ballet heritage, Princess Caroline of Monaco recalls the patronage of her mother, Princess Grace (seen in b&w archival footage). The company is seen in rehearsal and performance footage of Michel Fokine's Le spectre de la rose, first performed in Monte Carlo in 1911 and revived under the supervision of Serge Golovine, and Léonide Massine's Gaité parisienne, revived by his son Lorca Massine. John Neumeier is depicted in the process of mounting a ballet to a Mahler symphony. Much of the program is devoted to rehearsal and performance footage of Boris Ėĭfman's Les intrigues de l'amour, marking the Russian choreographer's western debut. The program closes with scenes from Antony Tudor's The leaves are fading and George Balanchine's Theme and variations, the latter rehearsed under the supervision of guest teacher Gisèle Roberge.
