- Summary
- In a discussion moderated by his sister Shami Chaikin, director and playwright Joseph Chaikin reviews his life and career with his friends and collaborators Mira Rafalowicz and Anders Cato. Mr. Chaikin's work with the Open Theater, which he co-founded, is explored, including such performance pieces as Jean-Claude van Itallie's The serpent and Susan Yankowitz's Terminal. The theatrical history of Mr. Chaikin's adaptation of S. An-Ski's The dybbuk is examined, as are his collaborations with Sam Shepard, Samuel Beckett, and Arthur Miller. Ms. Chaikin contributes information about the near-fatal stroke Mr. Chaikin suffered in 1984, which caused him to become aphasic, and Mr. Cato, who met and began working with Mr. Chaikin after the stroke, describes the impact of Mr. Chaikin's disability on his directorial technique.
