Description
1 videocassette (45 min.) : sd., col. PAL; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
Documentary on the Australian tours of the ballet company directed by Vasily de Basil, which was variously known as the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet, the Covent Garden Russian Ballet, and the Original Ballet Russe. The program focuses on the cultural interchange between the dancers and Australian audiences and artists, and the company's impact on the development of Australian ballet. The company's influence made itself felt in advertising, fashion and journalism ; it inspired Australians to study ballet, and served as a model for homegrown companies such as the Australian Ballet. Reciprocal movements included the company's employment of Australian dancers (among them Valrene Tweedie) and designers. Among the topics discussed are the company's repertory, comprising ballets by Leonide Massine, George Balanchine, David Lichine and Michel Fokine ; notable personalities such as Léon Woizikowski and his daughter Sonia, Igor Youskevitch, Tamara Toumanova and Nina Verchinina ; dancers who stayed in Australia, and their ensuing achievements, which included the formation of the Borovansky Ballet, the Kirsova Ballet, the Polish-Australian Ballet, and the West Australian Ballet. The program is illustrated with performance excerpts and views of the dancers in class and rehearsal, backstage, and at leisure, including rarely seen footage by Dr. Ewan Murray-Hill, an Australian fan.
