Summary
Profile of Ludmilla Chiriaeff, founder and co-director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, filmed in Montréal in her home, in the company's studios and at the ballet school at Pierre Laporte School. Chiriaeff looks back at her childhood and upbringing, her family's experiences during World War II, and her subsequent immigration to Canada. She recalls her early performances and choreography in Canada, and the repressive atmosphere that then surrounded dance. With co-director Fernand Nault and her husband Uriel Luft, a company administrator, she discusses the founding of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and some of its successes, among them Nault's Carmina burana (seen in a rehearsal excerpt) and Tommy. Her concluding statements, emphasizing the importance of dance training, are illustrated by scenes of classes and rehearsals at the Pierre Laporte School.
