Description

Summary
Documentary on the creation of the ballet Jazz (Six syncopated movements), choreographed by Peter Martins to a score commissioned from Wynton Marsalis by Jazz at Lincoln Center and New York City Ballet in 1992. Theprogram follows the making of the work from early discussions between the choreographer and composer, through studio and stage rehearsals, to an interview with Charlie Rose, and the opening night performance. Martins, Marsalis, and members of their respective ensembles offer their own viewpoints of their artistic collaboration, stressing the difficulties of combining the different art forms of jazz music and classical ballet, yet recognizing the value of the experience.
