Summary
A nurse working in Boston is engaged to a white man unaware of her Afro-American heritage. Fearing discovery she returns to her home in Mississippi where she helps her grandmother care for a plantation matriarch who designates the young woman as her heir, an event which rouses the community's ire and results in a dramatic court trial.
