- Playwright, screenwriter and actress. Ruby Dee (Ruby Ann Wallace) was born in Cleveland, OH, 1924. She received theatrical experience with the American Negro Theater in Harlem, 1941-1944. She appeared in the stage and screen versions of "A raisin in the sun," 1959 and 1961, and co-starred with her husband Ossie Davis in numerous theater, film and TV productions. Ruby Dee is a recipient of the Frederick Douglass Award, New York Urban League, 1970; Obie Award for "Boesman and Lena," 1971; and Actors Equity Association Paul Robeson Citation, 1975. Ruby Dee was elected to Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, 1975.
