Summary
Choreographer Agnes de Mille and composer Morton Gould discuss their collaboration on the ballet Fall River legend, first presented by Ballet Theatre in 1948. They describe how the true story of Lizzie Borden and the ax murders in Fall River was transmuted into terms that could be conveyed through dance and music. Excerpts from the ballet illustrate the points they make about dramatic motivation, the contribution of Oliver Smith's set designs, and musical and choreographic expression.
