- Summary
- Documentary on the flute ritual of the Asurini Indians, illuminating some of the many functions it serves (harvest celebration, fertility ritual, mourning for the dead). Interspersed with footage of the ritual, which encompasses instrumental music, singing, and dancing, are scenes of everyday life: preparing manioc, a staple food; cotton spinning and weaving; woodworking; pottery. Preparations for the ritual, which include body- and face-painting, bead-stringing, and flute-making, are also shown. The Asurini Indians' contacts with the outside world are demonstrated through their possessions (a boombox, sewing machine, tee-shirts and baseball caps) and their harsh words about those who encroach upon their territory. The program includes footage of the Maraká, a shamanistic healing ritual which includes a dance with rattles and chanting.
