- First publication of the Catlin ms., housed in the Dept. of Ethnography at the British Museum.
- The ms., titled "A selection of Indian pipes in Catlin's North American Indian collection, the drawings made and coloured from the originals by his own hand," consists of 23 plates with Catlin's watercolor drawings of calumets and other Indian artifacts (chiefly reproduced in black and white), with his commentary. Additional ill. include reproductions of other Catlin drawings and paintings and photos. of artifacts from his collection.
