- Summary
- Program 5 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. An examination of social dancing in the United States, the Cook Islands, and Morocco provides revelations on sex roles and social interaction, and reflects changing mores in each culture. Analyzing the American scene are Cynthia Novack, Richard Beauvais, and Kathleen Gerson. Sir Thomas Davis, Tereapii Enua, Jon Jonassen, Kauraka Kauraka, Takiora Ingram, and Ron Crocombe comment upon various aspects of dancing in the Cook Islands, including its historical focus on fertility, which was suppressed by 19th-century missionaries, its emphasis on group interaction, and the changes that have occurred with the growth of tourism. Moroccan dance is viewed in the light of Islamic strictures separating male and female spheres. Commentators are Soumeya Abdelaziz, Mohamed Chtatou, Fatima Mernissi, Halima Drissia, and Sidi Muhamed Lagharissi.
