Description

Summary
Episode 1 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. This program introduces some of the many facets of dance. Its educational role is portrayed through a visit to the National Dance Institute, directed by Jacques d'Amboise. Three noted performers, D'Amboise, Gregg Burge, and Irek Mukhamedov, express their love of dancing in action and words. The use of dance as a means of communication, and the religious roots of dance are illustrated by a Bharata Natyam performance by Malavika Sarukkai. Vijay Mehay, a British-born Punjabi living in Birmingham, England, discusses how the bhangra dance has helped him and his compatriots preserve a bicultural perspective. A discussion of dance and new technology includes remarks on videodance by Wim Vandekeybus, who also talks about the special movement style developed in his choreography.
