Summary
Program 8 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. The multicultural society of Los Angeles, California, serves as a showcase for different forms and functions of dance. In addition to representatives of cultural groups that now make the city their home, this program depicts visiting performers who appeared at the 1990 Los Angeles Festival. Peter Sellars, the festival's director, and Judy Mitoma, its co-curator, comment upon the diversity of the performances, which included Polynesian, American Indian, Australian Aboriginal, Balinese, Mexican-American, and African-American dances. Additional insights are provided by Falakika Mauvaka, Little Crow, Paul Apodaca, Raoul Trujillo, Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele, Daryl Woonan Williams, I Made Bandem, Peter Cleary, and James Burks. Examples of cross-cultural exchange include scenes of Mexican-American and Balinese children learning each other's dances, and a segment on Jiří Kylián's Stamping ground, which was inspired by Australian Aboriginal dances. Jawole Willa Jo Zollar discusses African and African-American dances.
