Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Groundbreaking dancers/choreographers Johnson and Wilson reminisce about studying and performing at a time when blacks were a rarity in ballet or Broadway companies. They discuss the importance of inspirational teachers such as Antony Tudor and Karel Shook, and the value of the dance technique developed by Katherine Dunham. Other topics include dancing in African-American churches, utilizing African-American themes, working conditions for blacks in Europe (where Wilson danced with the National Ballet of Holland), and the differences in working with actors and dancers. Dance excerpts screened include Wilson's Ginastera, performed by Dance Theatre of Harlem; Johnson's Fontessa and friends, danced by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and a dance from the opera Aïda; the Ailey company in rehearsal; and a dance from the film Damn Yankees, performed by Johnson and others.
