Summary
Interview with Anna Sokolow, preceded by footage of her acceptance speech at the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award ceremony on July 14, 1991. Sokolow looks back upon her career, beginning with early dance lessons, training at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Martha Graham and Louis Horst, her visit to Mexico at the invitation of painter Carlos Mérida, the actors' movement classes she taught at Elia Kazan's Actors Studio and at the Juilliard School, and her ill-fated venture into musical comedy, choreographing Joseph Papp's production of Hair. She also discusses sources for her dance themes, her explorations into the expressivity of body movement, the importance of teaching pre-classic dances, the inspiration for her work Rooms, the different types of works she has made, and her latest project, The street. Scenes of a class taught by her are interspersed with the interview. Jim May and Lorry May are seen in excerpts from her Lyric suite, performed at the American Dance Festival on July 14, 1991.
