CONTENTS: Cassette 1: Sources of Latin American music in Africa, Spain, and Cuba and the Caribbean. Topics include drumming and dancing in Africa; Spanish flamenco and the craze for the sevillanas; and the blending of the African and Spanish traditions in the New World. The roots of the Cuban rumba are explored, and present-day Cubans are seen dancing at a ritual meal and in dance competitions during Carnival. Singer Gloria Estefan discusses how Cuban traditions were transplanted to Miami, and performs a song and dance inspired by Afro-Cuban music.
