Summary

Two-part documentary on the choreography of Roland Petit, told mainly in his own words, and profusely illustrated with color and b&w footage of his works. Among the subjects he discusses are his experiences with the Paris Op{era Ballet, the Ballets des Champs-{Elys{ees, the Ballets de Paris, and Ballet National de Marseille; his collaborations with Jean Cocteau, Boris Kochno, and others; the classical heritage and its enrichment by other forms of dance; Zizi Jeanmaire's role as muse; and the contributions of the many designers with whom he has worked (among the latter is Yves Saint-Laurent, seen in a brief interview). He examines at length his ballets Le jeune homme et la mort, Carmen, and Notre Dame de Paris.
