Summary
Norman Walker and Robert Lindgren talk about their experiences as dancers, including their parents' responses to their career decisions, their perceptions of what might attract or deter men from dance careers, the contributions of Ted Shawn in popularizing male dancing, and the present-day situation for male dancers. The program is illustrated by archival footage of Shawn's Kinetic Molpai (b&w); a segment from the documentary The men who danced, featuring reminiscences by several former members of Ted Shawn and his Men Dancers, as well as archival footage of Shawn's The dome and Labor symphony; sections from Virginia Brooks's film School of American Ballet: Mae L. Wien Awards (1988), featuring students John Selya and Eric Lindemer respectively in variations from Cortège hongrois and the Corsaire pas de deux; and excerpts from Walker's Lazarus and Silent land.
