Summary
Abdel Salaam, director of the dance company Forces of Nature, and Lloyd Newson, director of DV8 Physical Theatre, discuss male dancing in the U.S., Britain, and traditional African dance, covering topics such as stereotypes of male dancers, the expression of sexuality in dance, and nudity in dance. Salaam compares the qualities of Limón technique with those of Senegalese and other African dance forms. Performance excerpts depict Ted Shawn and his Men Dancers in Labor symphony (b&w); the Chuck Davis Dance Company; Asadata Dafora's Awassa astrige, danced by Charles Moore; and the Forces of Nature company in From the mud below and Lamkavena ban. Esoterica balletica features Some more men who dance, screening excerpts of Shawn's Men Dancers and Jeff McMahon's dance film Cross body ride, performed by Donald Fleming and David Zambrano.
