Summary
Edward Villella, a former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet, talks about his performing career with that company and his present position as artistic director of the Miami City Ballet. He reminisces about learning the title role of The prodigal son from its choreographer, George Balanchine, and describes some characteristics of the Balanchine style. He recalls his studies with Stanley Williams and his partnership with Patricia McBride. Turning to the present, he discusses making the transition from performing, and the problems of administering a dance company. Excerpts from the NBC documentary Man who dances feature him and McBride in Tarantella, the Rubies pas de deux from Jewels, Tchaikovsky pas de deux, and other works by Balanchine. Williams is seen teaching class, and the Miami City Ballet is shown performing Raymonda variations (?). In an additional feature, percussionist Max Roach discusses Kodo, the Japanese company of drummers and dancers, who are seen in a performance excerpt.
