Summary
Mary Wigman's contributions to German modern dance are remembered by author Walter Sorell, who was a personal friend of hers, Susanne Linke, a dancer/choreographer who was among the last generation to study Wigman, and dance historian Susan Allene Manning, a specialist on Wigman and German modern dance. Sorell contrasts Wigman's choreography with that of Isadora Duncan, and points out how Wigman moved away from the conventional female stage persona to portray themes dealing with social issues. Linke recalls the special qualities of Wigman's teaching. The guests also discuss Rudolf Laban's influence on Wigman, and Hanya Holm's role in bringing Wigman's ideas to the U.S. In conclusion, Linke is seen in excerpts from three of her own solos: Es schwant... (Swans weigh), Orient-Occident, and Im Bade wannen (Bath tubbing).
