Summary
Veteran tap dancer Charles "Cookie" Cook and Hank Smith, who combines the arts of tap, mime, and clowning, talk about black performers in minstrel shows and vaudeville. Among the performers and institutions they discuss are Bert Williams; Billy Kersands; John Bubbles; Black Patti (called after opera singer Adelina Patti), star of the roadshow Black Patti's Troubadours; the vaudeville team of [Charles] Cook and [Ernest] Brown; challenge dances at the Hoofers' Club; and the T.O.B.A. (Theatre Owners' Booking Association), nicknamed the "Toby" circuit. Cook demonstrates the time-step, buck and wing, soft-shoe, and Bambalina, and describes the dance called the Essence of old Virginia, which evolved into the soft shoe. In closing, Smith and Cook perform a dance and rap.
