- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Wendy Hilton and Régine Astier, respectively authorities on baroque and 18th century dancing, discuss various aspects of social dancing of the period, including its roots in Renaissance dance, the function of the dancing master, the significance of the minuet as a touchstone of good breeding, the relationship of theatrical and social dance, and the rise of virtuosity in the 18th century. Dance excerpts include La Bretagne, choreographed by Louis Pécour and performed by Catherine Turocy and Ron Taylor of the New York Baroque Dance Company; the minuet, performed by members of the New York Baroque Dance Company; and the minuet and an allemande choreographed by Pécour, staged by Hilton and performed by Juilliard students Gina Bonati and Christopher Battenhorst. Astier is seen in an excerpt from her one-act play Que savez-vous de Camargo, in which she appears as Marie Camargo opposite Turocy's Marie Sallé. In Esoterica balletica, Islene Pinder discusses the significance of dance in Bali, then displays masks made in Bali and Czechoslovakia, and performs a few moments from a masked dance.
