- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Guests are Diana Byer, the director of Balletfore; Donald Mahler, choreographer and director of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet; and George Daugherty, founder and artistic director of Festival Dance Theater. They discuss the challenges of capturing different choreographic styles in the varied repertories offered by their companies. Byer describes how the teacher Margaret Craske provided a direct link with Fokine in her company's staging of Les sylphides. Daugherty tells how his company enlisted the help of Violette Verdy and Merrill Ashley respectively in staging Balanchine's Tchaikovsky pas de deux and Who cares?, a recorded segment of which is shown. Mahler notes the stylistic variety of opera ballets, and tells an anecdote about Verdy's performance in La Gioconda. The guests discuss technique, artistry, and musicality in revivals. To conclude, an excerpt from Balletfore's revival of Fokin's Carnaval is screened. In Esoterica balletica, Ipiotis shares some correspondence from viewers of Eye on dance.
