Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Choreographers Meg Harper, Elizabeth Streb, and Blondell Cummings discuss the different ways in which their choreography breaks with traditional images of women in dance. Harper and Streb perform an excerpt from Harper's Women of iron; recorded excerpts of Cummings' Chicken soup and Streb's Fall line are shown. Streb talks about her interest in functional movement; Cummings about her use of contemporary and personal sources. Harper discusses the influence of Merce Cunningham, with whom she performed. Other topics include choreography as a reflection of the socio-political climate and the influence of alternate forms of training (jogging, gym workouts, martial arts) and their role in extending the movement vocabulary. In Esoterica balletica, Ben Sommers, head of Capezio, Inc., recalls how he and Walter Terry organized a demonstration during World War II to advocate dance as a form of physical fitness for women.
