Summary

Psychiatrist Judith Kupersmith and Delia Peters and Mel Tomlinson, dancers with the New York City Ballet, discuss changing attitudes towards dancers and dance as a profession, especially for men; rising standards in dance, sparked by competitions, and the resultant increase of stress; the increasing independence of dancers, evident in their pursuit of advanced education and concern about second careers; and other subjects related to the psychology of dancers. They close by offering some advice to aspiring dancers. Anna Kisselgoff, in Esoterica balletica, relates some anecdotes about Walter Terry.
