Dramatized re-creation and discussion of the cafés cantantes, circa 1900, which provided performing outlets for flamenco dancers and musicians. Performance excerpts include: Soleá, danced by Tia Juana "La del Pipa"; Ole de la curra, danced by Maria Victoria; Seguiriyas de Silverio [vocal number], sung by Luis Caballero; Tangos, danced by Pepa "La Feligrana"; Tangos, danced by "El Titi"; and Tangos, danced by Luisa Torran. Flamencologists Francisco Moreno Galvan and J. M. Caballero Bonald appear in interviews. -- Café cantante (hacia 1930) (approx. 29 min.). Dramatized re-creation of a café cantante of the 1930s, coupled with b&w archival footage and reminiscences. Performance excerpts include: Sevillanas boleras, danced by Los de Balmes [company]; Tientos, danced by Trini España; Garrotín, danced by Merche Esmeralda; and Alegrías, danced by Matilde Coral. - Two programs from the documentary series Rito y geografía del baile flamenco, which presents an extended analysis of different aspects of flamenco dancing, in conjunction with other Spanish dance forms. Performances by amateur and professional dancers are recorded on location, onstage, and in dramatized re-creations of scenes from the past. Additional information is provided through interviews with scholars, dancers, musicians, and others associated with the art of flamenco song and dance.
