Summary
Documentary on Buto, the Japanese modern dance/theater form. Commentator Mark Holborn offers definitions and descriptions, and traces its history and development. The documentary includes interviews in Japanese, subtitled in English, with major figures such as the late Tatsumi Hijikata, the originator of the form, and his wife Akiko Motofuji; Kazuo Ohno; Akaji Maro, founder of Dai Rakuda Kan; Isamu Ohsuga, founder of Byakko Sha; and Yoko Ashikawa, director of Hakutobo. The numerous performance excerpts include historical footage of Hijikata; Kazuo Ohno in Admiring La Argentina and The dead sea (with his son Yoshito); Dai Rakuda Kan in The five rings, The silver sea, and other works; and Byakko Sha in Parade (Gyo retsu), Tai matsu, Civil wars, and other works.
