- Performance excerpts from Variations for four, The New Year's sacrifice, The demon and the mermaid, Swan lake Act II, and The maid from the sea, and from rehearsals of The demon and the mermaid, Swan lake, and Giselle. Brief history of ballet in China. Ballet pioneer Dai Ai Lian is seen in film clips from 1946 and in her present capacity as artistic advisor of the company. Bai Shuxiang, a ballerina of the 1950s, rehearses Swan lake and Red detachment of women. Children at the Beijing Dance Academy are seen in ballet, folk and Chinese classical dance classes. The company members attend classes in New York City with Graciela Daniele, Paul Taylor, and Miguel Godreau. Alicia Markova coaches two dancers in the Swan lake Act II pas de deux; Suki Schorer teaches two women an excerpt from Concerto barocco. Ballet master Zhang Chunzeng and several dancers discuss their experiences (in Mandarin with English subtitles).
