Summary
Compares the ballet Coppélia as danced today with the original Paris Opéra version of 1870 using a woman in the travesti role of Franz. The dominance of the female dancer in late 19th century Western Europe and the Russian influence which saved ballet by preserving the classical style discussed. Generous portions of the 1870 and 1969 productions of Coppélia are danced by Margaret Barbieri (Franz, 1870) and Janet Francis (Swanilda, 1870), Nicholas Johnson (Franz, 1969) and Brenda Last (Swanilda, 1969), Oliver Symons (Dr. Coppelius), David Blair (Innkeeper), and Alison Howard and Spencer Parker (betrothal dance)
